Remember how you felt as a child leading up to Halloween? A time tunnel devoted to transforming yourself into a magical being. It’s not the candy we remember but our own abilities to surprise other people, scare them, or dazzle them with our beauty.
Tomorrow when you see any child in costume, recall how it felt when adults stopped, even for a minute, and registered amazement at what you had become. Maybe they even asked you to tell the story of your costume. Their appreciation of your remarkable new self helped light the fire of new possibilities inside you and encouraged you to believe “My imagination allows me to change.” On Halloween children get to practice manifesting new identities.
Remember the feeling of bravery and invincibility as you walked past skeletons, ghosts, and ghouls and dared to ask adults for treats. On Halloween children are invited to assert their abilities to make fear take flight.
Halloween is also a tribute to embracing the childhood capacity for spontaneity, mischief, and fun. It’s a night when we actively appreciate children’s ability reactivate our sense of wonder. We owe children a debt. What would our lives be like without them? They pull us back into the light of right now.
As it gets colder and darker, Halloween is also the gateway ushering us into the season of conviviality, which warms our hearts during the darkest months, not only through holiday celebrations, but in our everyday interactions of love.
