For years White Pony Director Susie Kohl has been a collector of parents’ stories, and in her new book, The Best Things Mothers Do, just released on Amazon, she shines a loving light on mothers and the ways they handle challenges, sometimes extraordinary, with creativity and resilience.
Susie considers the true stories of mothers in her book heroic because they boldly counter the culture’s stereotypes of the confused mom, either over-involved or in her child’s life or oblivious to their needs. Instead, the narratives show the resourcefulness mothers discover when they think in terms of the “big picture.”
“When disruptions occur in their life plans, mothers are often the ones who demonstrate how to handle problems in ways that promote caring, compassionate community. Research suggests that over millennia women have evolved the capacity to replace their fight-or-flight response during crises with tending and befriending others.”

The book includes turning points in mothers’ lives at every stage of children’s development and addresses a wide range of problems and provides countless strategies. The though-line is stepping out of spiraling thoughts to see the big picture, which provides compassion for our children and for ourselves. (Susie is now beginning to collect stories about fathers.)
